College Students

The Mass. Council College Outreach Program has worked with more than 25 Massachusetts colleges and universities. Over the past few years, the program has offered training and technical assistance to colleges and universities interested in developing gambling policies and procedures and or prevention of problem gambling programming efforts. Interested schools are encouraged to contact the Council.

Several products were created to supplement these efforts including: a set of posters about student gambling, a Resident Assistant (RA) training curriculum, and print public service announcements (PSAs). The Council has also supplied every college and university with two copies of the book, “Gambling on Campus: New Directions for Student Services No. 113 (J-B SS Single Issue Student Services). McClellan, George S., Jim Caswell, and Thomas W. Hardy. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 2006.

We have also begun an outreach effort to support the intervention efforts of counseling professionals on college and university campuses working with students experiencing problems in living due to their gambling.

In addition, the Council has develooped a training for college athletes which addresses issues specific to this population, and covers the rules about gambling set forth by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
