CorrectionsThe Council knows that sometimes gambling can be a trigger for crime. In response to this, we developed a brochure for people completing their sentences in the county correctional system. The hand-out discusses gambling as a trigger for criminal activity, and that help is available. The brochure was sent to all of the county corrections facilities in Massachusetts, as well as several probation and parole offices.
Four one-hour psycho-educational training series for pre-release inmates were piloted at both the Bristol and Plymouth county houses of corrections by the Council in which 260 inmates participated. Offenders were from substance abuse treatment units, as well as an anger management program.
The Council has provided problem gambling prevention training at the Massachusetts Alcohol and Substance Abuse Center, a Department of Corrections facility in Bridgewater, and a monthly GA meeting is now planned for the institution! Staff training was also provided to 17 treatment professionals at the Hampden County Regional Women's Correctional Facility in Ludlow, and to professionals at the Greenfield District Court.
